They are Billions: A punishing time waster

They are Billions is an RTS based on the surprisingly untapped well of rebuilding humanity after a pandemic ravages the planet and into your standard zombie apocalypse. The player's goal is to slowly push out the zombie hoards and build several settlements to reconquer the land in the glorious name of the empire. Battle through the ever growing ways and ever more dangerous enemies and secure the continent. A simple plot that doesn’t bring up any interesting questions or themes but sadly, no characters to enjoy. They are Billions begins easily enough, with Emperor Quintis allowing the player to begin another attempt to spread humanity back onto their homeland. It is here that the first problem reveals itself, even if the player does not realize it till later. Quintis is the only character that speaks to you and that is only 5 times, at the beginning the game, after clearing a certain set of missions, and after the final mission; These cutscenes boil down to “good job, don’t fu

Valkie 64: A not so perfect start

(This review was written before several updates to the gameplay.) Valkie 64 is a game that emulates the aesthetic of the N64 Legend of Zelda games but fails to fully cross the finish line in a similar vein to either Ocarina of Time or Majora’s Mask, and, sadly, falls flat at even the halfway point. While it captures their looks to the point that it would not be out of place with the games of the era, it sadly lacks many of the gameplay and story touches that make the N64 Zelda titles such classics and so beloved by fans. If one would compare it generously to said titles, then It would be compared to forgotten titles from the era that one may remember fondly years later. None of this is to say that Valkie 64 is a poor or bad game, but more that Valkie 64 is lacking in various places that leave one wanting, but it does setup the building blocks for later sequels to be proper challenges or complementary pieces to the N64 classics that defined 3d gaming. Valkyrie 64 begins with a simple pr

Gunsmith Cats, A fun romp that needed more.

Gunsmith Cats the OVA, is a three episode adaptation of one of the many adventures of gunsmiths/bounty hunters Rally Vincent and May “Minnie” Hopkins. This 3 long OVA covers the titular gunsmith cat's struggle with being blackmailed by the ATF and combating the Russian assassin, Radinov. It is not a complete adaptation of the Manga, but more of a short look into the Gunsmith Cats experience. Gunsmith Cats begins with stylized opening in the same vein as Cowboy Bebop, though Gunsmith Cats’ choice in music hits a much more triumphant feeling, full of action and fast paced all throughout, giving off a feeling that describes Rally and May perfectly. These girls go through the world with nary a feeling of dread in their hearts, always ready to face the odds and come out on top with a smile and ready to kick back after a long day at work. Character wise, each member of the cast feels unique and with easily identifiable characteristics. Rally being the strong and always, or at least tries

Lifeless Planet: Not all that Lifeless

Lifeless Planet is a walking simulator that follows a nameless astronaut awakening after a crash landing on a planet that was supposed to be full of life. Now stranded, low on oxygen and alone, all this man can do is wander, hope to find his other teammates and do something about this hopeless situation.  Being a normal astronaut, the player doesn’t have many mobility options, you can run and jump like a normal human. Thanks to astronaut technology however, you have access to a small jet thrust that can help push you just a bit further or give you more jump height. You can also push certain objects around, usually to create platforms, open up a path or complete some of the very basic puzzles in the game. Later on the player gains access to consecutive jet jumps and a long robot arm to solve specific puzzles with. It’s very simple gameplay, even with multiple jumps, and that’s all it really needs. Lifeless Planet does the standard “data logs tell you the lore” that most Walking Simulat

Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance: Two Sandboxes of Violence

Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance is the third Castlevania game on the GBA console, and the only one to actually have a player control a Belmont, Juste Belmont, and his time to battle the Belmont family’s greatest enemy, Dracula, though not everything is as it should be. Harmony of Dissonance begins with Juste and his friend Maxim arriving at the recently restored  Castlevania, something that should not be as Dracula was defeated less than 100 years ago. Maxim, who located this castle, suffering from amnesia and weak tells Juste to continue without him and save their mutual friend, Lydie, from the horrors that lie within Dracula’s restored Castle. Juste, plays similar to any Belmont, using the family whip, Vampire Killer,  as his one and only primary weapon while having access to various sub-weapons. Unlike many other users of the Vampire Killer, Juste is an experienced spell caster and, upon discovering the spell books hidden within the Castle, can combine the elemental attribut

Digimon Anode/Cathode: A rough beginning of a franchise.

Digimon Digital Monsters Anode/Cathode Tamer can best be described as Pokemon Conquest but made for the GB Color, and with the general writing of the original Red/Blue games. A relic of it’s time that would be a kickoff point for the franchise on the hand held, and remain a strange part of the digimon franchise as a whole decades later. Digimon Anode/Cathode follows young boy Ryo Akiyama who, on Christmas eve, is contacted by the Digimon Agumon, who is seeking someone to take his partner’s digivice and help save his friends. Ryo agrees and gets a proper explanation. Following the original Digimon adventure anime up until the battle with Machinedramon, in which he fused with a Chimeramon, resulting in the Digimon God of Time, Milleniummon. Using it’s new power Milleniummon quickly captured all of the digidestined and their partners except for Agumon. With no partner of his own, Ryo must rely on the power of Tai’s digivice to recruit enemy Digimon to Ryo’s side, while rescuing t
